Margaux Barthélemy Has Art in Her Blood

Margaux Barthélemy has the character of a woman from the South. She is passionate about contemporary art and design, having honed her skills at the right school! She began learning at home from her parents, from friends of artists and art collectors, but also in galleries. Later, Margaux trained her eye via meetings and experiences with high-profile artists, such as Mathias Kiss and the Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London. Being alone, she felt the need to write and created Hashtag ART. Writings about the best in contemporary art in Paris and elsewhere. Exhibitions, artists, architecture – nothing escaped her critical eye. One thing led to another, and she met the founders of Early Work and became involved in the project. Early Work is a online art sales website that presents young artists, just out of art school or in their final year. What is Early Works’ USP? Finding the next big thing, to “Meet Pablo before Picasso”! A brave and clever idea orchestrated by enthusiasts and that is worth studying in more detail. Margaux is now one of the gang and searches for the people who will create the artistic scene of tomorrow. Calling all connoisseurs and lovers of contemporary art – this fabulous website will make you feel like something of a benefactor – and, who knows, you might even find the piece of your dreams !

Can you tell us about your career ?

Margaux

I left Marseille after sixth-form college to come to Paris, 8 years ago. After a preparatory class in applied arts at Penninghen and a year of architecture and design at Camondo, I began a Bachelor’s and then a Master’s degree in History and the Art Market. After a few jobs in galleries, including Carpenters Workshop Gallery in Paris and in London and the Parisian workshop of artist Mathias Kiss, I wanted to dedicate myself to more personal projects. Mainly to the creation of my site which is about contemporary art, , which launched a year ago. At the same time, I also joined the team where I’m responsible for communications.

When did you join the Early Work team and what was it about the concept that attracted you ?

Margaux

I joined the wonderful Early Work team nearly a year ago today. The idea immediately appealed to me, firstly because of the fantastic concept summed up in the evocative slogan “Meet Pablo Before Picasso”! It also appealed to me as an exciting and ambitious adventure: the creation of a company, being the first in such an exciting niche market, creating art schools, being able to support these developing artists, making their precious work accessible to the public! The project also allows me to work on a daily basis with a brilliant, charming team of young men who are now my colleagues, to be in with passionate young artists, to support them at the beginning of their careers and to spend time in their workshops.

How would you like Early Work to develop ?

Margaux

Early Work was launched to the public in November and we’re trying every day to improve the platform, which is constantly being developed, to be able to respond to artists and collectors in the most qualitative way possible. In the future, Early Work would like to go further in the way in which it accompanies artists. We’re working on a daily basis on ideas including supporting them with their exhibition projects and their productions. We would also like to meet with members of the public on a regular basis with exhibitions in Paris, other cities and also abroad…

How can people get involved with Early Work ?

Margaux

Early Work is specifically aimed at art school students and young graduates who have left school within the last five years. These students and graduates can send a portfolio via our site, in the “Suggest artwork” section. As the Early Work team, we meet to review all the applications we receive on the website and on Facebook. We also find young artists on the internet and at exhibitions.

What can you tell us about your other projects ?

Margaux

I spend the rest of my time on Hashtag Art, where I try to share my impressions of exhibitions which have struck me for their intelligence, their refreshing approach, their originality or their humour with my readers… I also talk about artists I’ve been lucky enough to meet, arty destinations in the TRAVEL section including the Arles Rencontres and Artorama in Marseille. I also try to get off the beaten track with debriefs on events as popular as the FIAC, but with off-the-wall and incredibly relaxed interviews. I’m also inviting more and more people to come and write on Hashtag Art; I really like the idea of creating a community around the site itself, and that my readers aren’t satisfied just by my view of art. In tandem with Hashtag Art and Early Work, I’m also currently working on a great project to do with Artist Run Space in Paris.
