The Madness of Art Glass

The Madness of Art Glass

Transparency was the star of the show this autumn at the Maison&Objet exhibition! Coffee tables, vases, lighting: the art glass enchanted us, whether sculptural or colourful. We loved it handblown, piled up or superimposed in combinations of bright colours and light that make us feel good. The shapes are softened, as if polished to better envelope our spirit. A theme of comfort that develops around the art of entertaining. A beautiful table with exquisite glasses, perhaps in crystal, perhaps not, with original lines and a heavy base, is more stunning than ever. Displaying one’s collections is a way of showing one’s tastes for the savoir-faire of artisans and the amazing historic companies which are part of the French heritage of crystal glass-making. Baccarat, Saint-Louis, Lalique and Daum: their creations, inexhaustible sources of inspiration, are more highly sought-after than ever. Even the biggest European producers are getting in on the act! Tom Dixon, with his organic handblown pieces caused a sensation, not to mention the Milanese studio Böjte-Bottari and its protective vases. We still remember the home of Cristina Celestino with its lovely carafes beautifully crammed into a vintage industrial display case. Smoked glass was not her thing, but you can expect to see this feature of the seventies taking possession of our mirrors, tables and lighting in the coming months. As you can see, art glass is up for anything. Time for you to get some too.
